Welcome to Optical-Microscopes
What is an optical microscope? To answer this, let’s review the different types of optical microscopes on the market. The most common type is the compound light microscope that uses compound objectives with eyepieces to give a resulting magnified image of the specimen. The compound microscope typically has three or four objectives that rotate on a turret and are easily selected by the microscopist. It may have one eyetube with one eyepiece. This would be considered a monocular compound optical microscope. If there are two eyetubes with eyepieces (so both eyes can visualize the magnified image), the equipment would be considered a binocular optical microscope. If a third port (used for video microscopy and microphotography applications) exists on the top part of the microscope, then the unit is called a trinocular optical microscope.
While we can consider an optical microscope to be a monocular, binocular, or trinocular version, there are still other types that need to be reviewed. For example, a stereo optical microscope would have two eyepieces (for a stereo visual effect) and be called a binocular. If the third photography port exists, then it’s called a trinocular version, just like the compound microscope is considered. Most optical microscopes can be considered to be either compound or stereo. The stereo types are sometimes called stereoscopes, or dissecting (dissection) microscopes, as they can be used in high school science classes for dissection of animal specimens.
